How to Make Hot Water Without Electricity
October 31st, 2006If you have ever gone a few days without electricity, you know one of the first things to go is the warm and hot water sitting in your water heater, even faster if you have a tankless water heater. Having lived through too many hurricanes to remember them all, I heard this tip from someone on the local radio last year and it really does help.
Stuff you need:
1.Garden Hose: One long as possible or have a few of them, enough to put one in each spigot
2.Trigger Nozzle or valve to stop water from flowing out.
Connect hose to spigot, make sure trigger nozzle is on the other end and closed. We don’t want water coming out.

Now turn on the spigot and take the hose to a sunny area, preferably on cement. Leave it for about 2 hours, then dump water into tub or wash basin and you have warm water to bathe. The first few seconds, the water may be really hot so be careful, The hose itself will start to feel cool to the touch as the cold water begins to make its way through.
*Remember to let some water run through the hose, before you start trying to heat it, in order to let the air out
It isn’t a jacuzzi, but it beats having to heat up water on a propane or wood fire or bathe in cold water. This is especially good if you have babies or younger kids that you absolutely cannot bathe in cold water.
Obvioulsy all this isn’t needed if you have a power generator, but then what fun would that be?

This is a good idea and fun for the kids too.
Thank you.
